The Tribute
“DISCOVERED COVERED – The Late Great Daniel Johnston” has two CDs – the first with successful contemporary musicians exposing in their performance the articulate messages Daniel achieved in his earlier efforts. The second CD allows you to hear those early – sometimes “lo-fidelity” – recordings by Daniel, along with a new song from Daniel, “Rock This Town”, produced by Brian Beatty.
For your entertainment, Mark Miller (maker of the music video “Davinaire”) has included a delightful visual form of “Rock This Town” that can be played from CD #2 on your computer.
But finally, so that you experience some of BOTH SIDES of Daniel – the musician AND the artist – digital images of 150 of fairly recent pen and marker drawings are included for your viewing, musing, and if you are inspired and quick enough, for you to own.
The art included here is all (except for one) representative of his current artistic output. It is “stream of consciousness” subject matter, and very often satirizes or surprises us with comments from his “cast of characters” out of the head of Daniel Johnston today.
These art pieces will go on sale at 12:00 noon Pacific Standard Time on October 1, 2004 . They are for sale on a first-come-first-served basis, and are subject to changes in pricing.
“DISCOVERED COVERED – The Late Great Daniel Johnston” is at least the THIRD of several “Tribute” compilations of Daniel Johnston covers. This one was the heart-felt undertaking of Jordan Trachtenberg of Gammon Records. Jordan and Taylor Clyne of Gammon records have worked sacrificially on this project as a labor of love. Jordy and Taylor have undertaken to improve the uncertain future of Daniel by promoting his work in a BENEFIT CD. They solicited known enthusiasts from among respected, successful contemporary musicians to honor and promote the works of Daniel.
The request was immediately understood by these artists. Daniel's current stable circumstance is at risk as his parents are aging (aged 81 and 82), and without help, Daniel faces an unfortunate future in his aging years.
These musicians and others who's affinity for Daniel's work has advanced into personal involvement, seek to help Daniel financially through their contributions to efforts like this Tribute Album. Daniel benefits directly from the sale of each CD, and from the expanded exposure and renewed interest in his twenty years of creativity. In addition, all the funds from the sale of art displayed digitally on the 2 nd CD goes directly toward Daniel's long-term housing and care.
This undertaking was not easy. There was SO MUCH material (over 600 songs are listed in a discography at www.rejectedunknown.com ) that it is difficult to include only eighteen and know that you've shown the diversity and surprises that comes from everything Daniel does. But these musicians made their choices – sometimes waffling between their selection – and the results are astounding and rewarding.
We trust that you will share the enthusiasm for the results, and explore other works from these contributing musicians, as well as Daniel's many and varied works.
